Dominica: History

The first inhabitants of Dominica were the Arawak Indians. They settled on the island about 2,000 years ago. The Carib Indians took it from the Arawaks about 1,000 years later. On November 3, 1493 - a Sunday - Christopher Columbus bacame the first European to sight the island. He named it Dominica, the Latin word for Sunday.

French and British settlers started to arrive in Dominica during the 1600's. For many years, the Carib, British, and French fought for control of the island. The British gained possession of it in 1763 and shipped African slaves to Dominica as farm workers. Britain freed the slaves in 1834. From the 1930's to the 1970's, Britain gradually increased Dominica's control over its own affairs. Dominica gained independence on November 3, 1978. (from TWBE)

The blurbs of info have been very interesting and tweaked my curiosity further about where we are going, it appears beautiful and I know we have a true purpose there as we work and worship together.
